On 25th February Andy, Grant and Richard Lucas travelled to London to hear Tim Keller. This report of our day was written by Richard.

Tim Keller spoke eloquently of our need as Christians to change our culture from within through the gospel distinctive of service. Our society has plundered Christianity of its goods and thrown out God: Christians only recourse is to serve people in society’s hubs.

On preaching the gospel, he urged us to address the ‘elder brother’ syndrome which says that if I’m moral and upright God will accept me. In other words, I am the source of my own salvation. This attitude produces pride and fear, whereas God’s gracious love keeps us humble and appreciative, inspiring us to live holy lives!

What happens at Alpha?
Our Alpha course is a series of nine evenings held at the King’s Centre. Each evening consists of a free meal, a talk, coffee and discussion.

Who is it for?
Alpha is open to anyone wanting answers, newcomers to church or people exploring their faith. It is your opportunity to discuss what you’ve heard, share your views, and ask anything you like. No question is too simple or too aggressive.

Course Content
Below is the general content of the Alpha course although we can vary what actually happens:

Week 1 Who is Jesus?
Week 2 Why did Jesus Die?
Week 3 How can we have Faith?
Week 4 Why and how do I Pray?
Week 5 Why and how should I read the Bible?
Week 6 How does God Guide us?
Week 7 How can I Resist Evil?
Week 8 Why and how should I tell Others?
Week 9 Does God Heal Today?
Week 10 What about the Church?

Holy Spirit Day
Towards the end of the course we invite people on the Alpha course to take a day out on a weekend for a ‘Holy Spirit Day’ in which we spend some time looking at what the Holy Spirit actually is.

For more information, testimonies on the course and information on Alpha itself go to Alpha’s official website at alpha.org.
